One solution is using the timers to implement the delay between each new comming pulse. I implemented with a table (with a linear profile for acceleration / deceleration:not the best case, neither the worst), where the delay is already stored, and is working fine.
Your routine is software dependant. You will need to achieve to correct start/stop speed for each application.
