I think your problem is ground noise. Are both ends connected to the same ground or are they power grounded separately. There is - as far as I know - only two communication methods that work in an industrial environment: balanced transmission (such as RS-485) and opto-isolation. If you use opto-isolation IT IS ESSENTIAL that no wire is galvanically connected between the two units.
