My intuition tells me that you might need a null modem adaptor because your microcontroller based device has a DB-25 Male connector, which suggests it might have the same pinouts as the PC. I could be wrong, but you should always use your meter to check out pin to pin connectoions on your cable first. Pay attention to pin 2, 3, 5 and 7 on each end.
