#3011 - Tandy THOR - The Untold Story |
Rauf,
I worked for two companies back in the early 80's designing nothing by hard drive controllers. When Western Digital began making VLSI chips to do that, I moved on to communications and automation systems for a few years. That was the most fun designing I've ever had. Later, in '87 or so Tandy asked me several times to help with their THOR* project. Its failure-by-management was assured so I avoided it. I kept a picture of ZEUS on my office door to make sure everyone understood I was not one of the "THOR engineers". * THOR was the early CD-RW patent Tandy acquired when they purchased Memorex, who had a research company developing the technology. Tandy made a very public promise to move the technology into a product by Christmas '88 and then proceeded to botch the THOR project as I predicted and witnessed. (there is a book in that) -Jay C. Box P.S. The THOR engineers had departmental "Carte Blanche" and could grab any equipment from any project in the desgn facility. This disrupted our work constantly and we labeled the annoying and pompous THOR Engineers as simply, "THOR Wh***s" :-) |
