Hi Chris,
I have more than "tried"; I use these devices on a fairly regular basis, along with a CPLD in a 100-pin TQFP. All handsoldered. I use an ERSA SMT-60 unit (Cost: 460 Euro, around GBP 300), which is really great. It can be fitted with a tip, specially designed for fine-pitch components. With it, you can solder a 100-pin TQFP faster than a 16-pin SO! A cheaper solution: I have discovered that the solder left on the board even after Hot-Air-Levelling is enough to make a good connection (at least for a prototype). Apply a liberal amount of flux to the board and the device, line the pins up with the pads and let the tip of the iron gently glide over the pins. It works surprisingly well. Good luck and remember not to drink and solder ;o), Rob. |
