#30746 - RE: Cygnal C8051F005 target
I agree with Rob. It is fairly easy to solder down one of the Cygnal parts. Essential tool include good liquid flux, fine point for solder iron, that environmentally nasty spray cleaner that works so well, small sized solder wick, and a good 10x head visor.

The bigger challenge by far is removal of the chip. For this I make a metal piece with a hole in it that is the size if the IC foot print on the PC board. A square hole is best but a slightly oversize round hole works too. Then using a heat gun aimed through the hole at the IC will melt the solder on the IC rather quickly. I have a tweezer on the chip and lift it as soon as the leads melt. To solve the problem of not having three hands I usually arrange to attach the metal heat mask right on the end of the heat gun barrel using one of those stainless steel hose clamps from the auto parts store. The mask can be made about 2.5 inches square and cut with 1/2 inch tabs extending out each side which are then bent up along each side of the heat gun barrel. (I usually cut the square hole in the mask using a cut-off wheel on my Dremel tool...(if you don't have one of these now, you will wonder how you ever got along without it once you do get one)... This does not do much good to the chip itself but does save the surrounding PC board from over heat. And usually I am not removing the chip just to prove it can be done so I dont care if it gets cooked.

This is the reason I love incircuit programmable parts so much. Cygnal microcontrollers are possibly some of the best!! For other logic I use Lattice or Altera FPGA's and equip even production boards with provisions for the JTag programming connectors (even if they are not populated).

I have found that using in circuit programmable parts that it is rather rare to have to remove parts! An essential part of that equation is to check and double check the artwork for the proto PC board. Nothing is worse to find than that the connection that needs to be cut is under the 100 pin TQFP !!

Regards
Mike
