You are correct that a multiply is possible but a "sensible power of 2" in this case would have to be close to 2^^16. If Brians input numbers are on a range of 16 bits then he would need multiply routines that work out past 32 bits. Your suggestion works great if the input numbers are in the range of 8->12 bits.
