andy, what were the results of the tests i suggested you perform? have you checked the TXD pin to see if it's resetting into download/debug mode? this could certainly be the case if anything were to momentarilly pull the PSEN pin low on the falling edge of reset, and would certainly cause the behavior you're describing. please phone me to discuss.
