There is some dangers with a software reset associated with the state of some flags inside the uC that we do not necessarily know about and sw can not manipulate. If what you want is a "start over" your method should work; however consider situations such as you resetting a TL register and TR is still set. In other words, yes you can, but it is not quite as simple as it seems. A much simpler method is to use (a chip with internal) watchdog and let the puppy bite
