A hex file is a hex file - dump the hex file to a simulator (Pinnacle is pretty good) put "time" in an absolute memory location and watch THAT in a simulator ! The same applies to any variables of suspect values.

Write a simple test harness around your suspect code to isolate the fault. Then you CAN use the serial ports.
