The output of TV remote control is a digital signal modulated on a carrier frequency (usually around 38KHz). All the codes (for all buttons) are transmitted on this same frequency, hence there is no particular frequency for Mute.

Serach the user pages on this forum, I remember someone has a very nice link to the functioning/codes of RC5 remote control.
