Certainly DC drives are cheaper to control, AC drives are cheaper to buy in any size bigger than 1/2 horsepower (~374 Watts)

Personally, I like the Siemens Micromaster 420 inverters, they are only single quadrant, but so much fucntionality in such a small box ! RS232 interface as standard, RS 485 as an option. Absolute magic.

We're using the 1.5kW and 5.5kW units.
