The SJA1000 allow faster bus access, thus it was more sensitive against hazards on the bus.
So I assume, the problems came from the pcb.

If you use some address decoding or bus drivers, you should try to use HC or AC series instead HCT, LS or F.

In case, if you use bus drivers, try also to remove these.


I use several SJA1000 on the DS80C320 (at 32MHz) without any problems. Its a 4-layer pcb and no bus drivers used.
