It doesnt really matter if the sound waves hit the microphone after the bullet has hit the target.If you use three microphones you can still triangulate the source.Perhaps they were being a little bit misleading in their explaination,perhaps it works from the sound of the bullets impact with the target,that would be quite easy with microphones mounted on the target.
