if you are willing to go that far you could recover bullet impact point from relative phase information from 3 microphone pick ups in a triad 3 to 6 feet from the target you would not need to expose youe mikes just a sample tube that is cheap and easily replaceable if all thetubes are the same length they would not distort the calibration .
