#36816 - RE: graphic LCD font generator application |
One thing to know about when using normal true type fonts in a manner supported by this utility (which is pretty cool as far as I can see) is that the pixelization of these fonts in smaller sizes can give results that are not as nice as one would like. This is in particular if the target font is to be displayed in just black/white format. Normally the scaled truetype fonts get their "good looks" via the use of dithering where the character is displayed in multiple shades of color. The desire to attain better looking smaller fonts has led to a lot of work done by people to produce smaller fonts that are in a Windows font file format but are designed to look better at fixed small point sizes without dithering.
Here is a link to a web site that has lots of free font files available. This link for BitMapped Fonts points to a series of over 200 of the fonts like I described. Generally these are free for most uses...in some cases there may be a minimal fee for usage in a product. Here is another link to the site of Susan Kare. Here she has a whole set of similar type font files avalable for purchase. These are VERY nice fonts that had a lot of work put into them. Small graphics LCDs are becoming more and more used on embedded products these days (i.e. take note that this is due in part to the digital cell phone craze) and as such embedded programmers can make use of utilities such as shown by Bahri and with fonts such as those at these web sites.
