#36872 - RE: pressure transducers, flow control
Your question can be stripped into two separate parts. First of all the selection of the pressure transducer, which is mainly based upon the process parameters and the environment it has to live in. Is the proces agressive or not, what is the operating temperature, is it a 'sticky' product, is the sensor housing likely to be exposed to liquid (water), etc. All these parameters define not only the type of sensor you will need (silicon-type, strain-gauge type, ceramic) but also the measuring type (absolute or gauge-type through venting) and type of process-diaphragm. When talking really harsh environments, check out Siemens, Rosemount, Endress+Hauser and similar, they can provide solutions for most applications. You mentioned flow control, so you could also consider using a dP sensor. Most dP sensors have the possiblity to directly get a square-root output signal so as to convert pressure drop to flow. It might be worth considering this option as it saves you from using 2 separate sensors.
The second part of your question is how to get the measured signal into your micro. Much depends again upon the type of sensor you use. If you have a plain 4..20 mA or 0..5V signal, you'll have to design an input buffer stage and A/D converter or use a ready-made A/D converter "blackbox" that can be controlled through a serial port interface (Advantech has these ADAM boxes, but there are many more on the market). Using readily available equipment like this probably is the fastest solution but designing you own will most likely be both the cheapest and most adaptive and most compact.
