I've no idea about using the (playstation, N64 or SNES ) controller pads (they just look like switches) , but I have used a PC joystick in a system that allowed the user to be 400yrds from the controller PC..


I used 555 timers (astable) to detect the joystik XY , then used the '51 to derive the XY based on the 555 frequency..
