..but if you have a pile of diodes and no 8 input NOR it might be great.
My problem with "solutions" such as this is that they get into the folklore and eventually when they misfire on someone we will have 42 posts about the software before it comes out "my OR is a bunch of diodes" and someone asks "what side is the ring connected to". Just recently the "RS-232 with a resistor and a transistor instead of the MAX232" came up and was described as "always working" which most of us know is false. I know it is tough to wait 3 days for a component to arrive, but if you want to keep your mental stability and hair, it is often the better idea. As you see, someone already rotated the diodes.
