Since they don't have access to state of the art FPGAs and CPLDs. People like to use what they can easily get, and there is someone to guide them. Most of them are students, hobbyists.. So they also can't afford the development tools.



Agreed, and it seems odd to go BACK to designing everything from scratch everytime. The thing hardware engineers always bitch about software engineers is that the software people always like to re-invent things. Now the hardware people are getting infected.

Until someone shows me cheap standard IP for nice simple standard functions like the 8255 I just don't buy the "CPLD" or FPGA is somehow easier or better than the relic idea of this black box with little legs, whose function you don't need to debug every time you use it.

If we have to miniaturise or reduce the consumption or otherwise optimise things then OK, yes, I have done it myself, but this emphasis on the CPLD as the panacea is not practical for everyone.
