I wish I were somewhere near you to practically help you out.

While your determination to write code is feverish, your aversion to Interrupts seems equally strong. As has been rightly pointed out they make life easy.

And incidentally did you run the 1 second ISR demo code that I had sent? Please note it was a full code and you dont have to add anything to it.

And as to your hardware description, why not try out the logic for 1 display - make it work - and then extend to four ? Breaking the code to small segments makes it easy to contend with.
