As far as that goes...use flash but rather than messing around why dont you simply get a part that has onboard flash. Using external components to store program code is almost a thing of the past. I know for sure that Philips has parts that hold 32K and even 64K of on board FLASH. And being rather familiar with Cygnal parts I can tell you thay have parts with on board FLASH all the way up to 128K bytes.
