------------------------------- My conclusion is that it would be silly to get into programming old style EPROMS, EEPROMS, or even 28Fxxx type external FLASH chips. All you have to do is read a couple of processor data sheets, scan through the Philips web site and search this forum for part numbers like P89C662, P89C664, or P89C66x. Make that investment and you will, I assure you, wonder why you ever though the external program memory was a good idea. While I prefer the 89C51RD2, there are still applications where external memory is the only practical solution. I have had to upgrade software in controls installed in animal confinement facilities (fancy way of saying 'Hog barns') The control boards have a pair of 29F010 chips (1 for program, 1 for settings and historical data) on a 'memory card' that is plugged into a header. The upgrade involves opening a case and swapping the card. I hope that I NEVER have to bring my notebook PC into that environment. Also, most of the people who service these customers do not even own a PC. The latest product we will be releasing will be updated by ISP, so I can't wait to try to explain to the service techs how to do the upload... -- Tom Bachmann |
