I think your initialisation code is wrong - assuming you are using 8 bit data, not 4 ? You should send the first code TWICE.

Try a pure delay instead of the busy flag read too - that often causes "fun"

Failing that, use the tutorial code -its about the cleanest code we know for the job - why write your own ?
