How close is very close - I was planning to use RS232 on my robot to make the servo controllers talk to the main board.
Are we talking inches, or feet here?
In an electrically noisy environment inches, in a quiet environment a foot or two.

PS, if you are not using MAX232 or equiv, you are NOT doing RS232, RS232 is about voltage levels and such.
