Philips has some absolutotally luvvely 1-2-4 UART chips. They have FIFOs both in and out which makes the handling much easier. Maybe a better solution would be to network a bunch of $0.50 - $1.50 LPCs with IIC. That way the LPCs could preprocess the serial data leaving your 'main controller' more time to do its task.
