are you sure that the prots are fried? Can't this problem be related to the reading timing?

I was using that ADC (0808) and whean I was "calibrating" my read-adc routine I even had problems related to "port swapping" -the reading of the first port appeared at the 8th port and vice-versa- that disapeared when I used a higher interval between readings.
