I need a suggestion.

For small machine control applications with the 8052 I normally provide a LCD display of the type HD44780 with backlit option. And for applications that do not need alphanumeric and only numerals I go with any of the standard display controllers like the 7218 ( 7 seg LED ).

For replacing the LCD, ( requirement : 2 line messages for instructions / diagnostics / warnings etc ) is there any other compact display that any of you can recommend ? I have searched and come across the Futaba luminious displays that are 1-to-1 replacements for the LCD 44780. Unfortunate they ask me to buy in thousands...

It is just that I am tired of this LCD type and would like a change that is more attractive, bright and compact.
