another thin is LPTx has TTL level signals so its good for short distance sychronous tranfer. with serial you can use some what long cables(not under marine but few meters). as speed does not matters you can go for serial 232 as well but as raghu said have to use right crystel so that it generates baudrates multiple of 1200 (pc does so see how UART 550 works).
