I think LM317 is best for lead acid battery charging. Using this you can CC charge the battery.

You can also make it so it does not exceed the overcharge voltage ...these circuits are in the datasheet for the LM317..

but it is heavily dependant on the AH rating of the battery..

A simple LM317 circuit will not charge a 100AH battery

Three years ago I built a ride on scooter for playing golf with..it has 2 x 12v 100AH standard car batterys for 24v ... (I decided to build the charger as buying one would have cost a fortune)

Following the detailed info that used to be on the old unitrode site , I built a 8051 based two step charger that initially charges the battery at C/5 (after a short trickle charge to detect duff batterys).
Once the battery reaches a point just under the overcharge voltage , it switches mode to become a constant voltage charger until the current reduces to a set level...from there it just gently trickle charges..

The battery were replaced a few months ago , ( the cyclic nature destroys car batterys fast anyway ) but the batterys were not expected to last that long..
