I have experienced erratic readings when I read a RTC from Benchmarq more than once per second. I sent an email to Benchmarq and they answered promptly. They said there is a limitation of 1 reading per second in their chip, a feature not described in the datasheet. Then I decided to thank Benchmarq for the fast answer, and to use a Dallas chip that work properly.
