Yes, of course you can have 256 bytes of some thing, using only port0, but how to avoid the latch?

I haven't tried using my controller x-tal for anything but the controller, mainly because i havent had the need. If I ever needed that, I stil think I would use a oscillator. Unless we are talking large number of systems, where there might be money to save on your solution.
