Depending on what 89C52 you have, you might have some better possabilities.

1. Use Timer 2 for baudrate generation

or better, if available

2. use the baudrate generator. in this case you wont "waste" a timer, use some internal stuff you have paid for.

the Atmel AT89C52 has both...

the Timer 2 should be available in more devices than the baudrate generator.
