a project of this sort has been published in EFY (electronics for you) magazine a few years back as a construction project. you can get that project and modify it to intelligently to suit your needs.

its a simple project. the only reason why you should look into EFY is because you dont have time, otherwise i would always suggest doing your OWN DESIGN.
