The Atmel evaluation board has 8 leds on port b, driven via a 1K pull-up (to +5V) resistor pack. Very simple.

Getting an 8051 to drive some hardware the first time creates a very steep learning curve! Before an output will turn on a transistor, it needs to draw a bit of current, so you need the pull-up resistors.
