Crystal : A component of an oscillator. It needs other gates/ loading capacitors etc to get it going and generate pulses.

4 pin Oscillators : A ready to use clock source. Just apply the specified power and out come the pulses. More on this can be had from a loooong thread that closed recently - search with the keyword "4 pin oscillator"
