#52556 - RE: Naming differences Responding to: ???'s previous message |
My original response was to answer mostly in general terms. We all know that there will be exceptions and the distinction gets more blurred every day, but when Intel originally created the 4004, the term Microprocessor came to designate thet type of single chip cpu, as opposed to a cpu made of multiple chips and even pc boards.
This is like the famous RISC vs CISC debate. In general terms, a RISC processor was a cpu designed to execute one instruction per clock cycle. Nowadays, you have the internal cpu clock, bus clock, instruction pipelining, etc. The term "clock cycle" has becomes a rather vague concept... |
