The power on delay for most LCDs is 15 ms. So before initializing the lcd wait for 15-20 ms. Increase the contrast of LCD. If the initialization procedure is succesfull then the black squares at the beginning will be lost. Also for different LCD rutins you should visit: http://www.ustr.net/lcd001.shtml.
