Thanks for the tips - both great ideas. As I see it from the suggestions above there are a couple of options.

1. Send the Plain text SQL string generated in the uC to the server and handle the returned result

2. Send a simpler query (just the ID for instance) to the lantronix port and let that wrap the rest of the SQL query around it and then send it off

I'll have a look at both and see what is simpler. and faster / less hassle for me to handle.
