If you see the net most of the Robotic enthusiastic and hobbyists use PIC , the PICTURE that you show are standard IR transmitters and Receivers .Why dont you use a 555 timer to generate Carrier and some PLL chip to decode it interfaced to your uC .These systems are similar to Ultrasonic ones so do search for them also . BTW is there any harm if you search GOOGLE??
