I thought in the begining that perhaps I am the most benefited person from this thread, but I think its you who has benefitted most from it. You may have gone thru the specs a hundred times to clear our misconceptions on rs232 and at the moment you are the best one to quote from the specs off the tongue :)

Anyway, the code does not quantify the distance with rs232 may be because the authors didn't know of cable qualities in the future. Yet however almost every book describes the maximum possible experienced distance achieved with rs232 not more than 150 ft, roughly 50 mtrs. I think beyond this distance any improvement in the cable quality would hardly add a centimeter.

Moral: the specs being wise didn't mention the distance but the real world told us not to exceed 50 mtrs with rs232.
