Peter:
I like your serial bit counter. I used a similar scheme many years ago to count transitions on multiple inputs. In that example I counted as two digit BCD in bit parallel manner in a sequence of 8 bytes. Actually that application monitored 32 inputs and kept the counts in 4 separate sets of 8 bytes.

It was like building a bit serial adder in software instead of hardware!!
