Well well we seem to agree on the port pin measurement technique.
I must say that manual cycle counting is very much work and prone to mistakes because of the analytical requrements to deal with different paths through the code when there are conditional branches. I have also found that if you work for a manager that is demanding excessive parametric analysys on your code then you are having to deal with a very unrealistic person. The test I/O measurement technigue is very fast, very easy to implement, and gives REAL system results. There are times by the way, when using this technique to analyze code pieces that have wildly varying execution path times wherein it is almost required to have a digital scope (DSO) or logic analyzer because an analogue scope may have great difficulty reliably triggering on or displaying the erratic waveform.
