I had concern that maybe he did not even have the hardware interface complete. There are three big issues with XDATA connections to LCD modules. 1) Making sure the E signal pulses high level when in active state, 2) Making sure E signal is wide enough, particularly if high speed processor is used, and 3) Ensuring the hold time of the data bus lines to the LCD module at the end of the E pulse.
