Hi Abdul,
Thats because you are switching a horribly nasty inductive load (the loaded compressor). Your peak switch on current could be very easily 10 X or even higher, than your final RMS current for maybe 1/2 or a full cycle of the mains supply. Look for TRIACS with high peak current (single cycle) handling.
