Ugh. I had the unhappy experience of using Schultz's book as a textbook in a class on microcontrollers. About half of the example programs from that book are wrong. It was quite a learning experience using that book, since we had to debug so many of his examples!

I was using the 2nd edition. Maybe there is a more recent edition of better quality.
