I agree.
Starting on C without any machine knowledge guarantee only many frustrations but never a working program.
Its really recommended to start with assembler to learn all needed fundamentals about the micro.

Only, if some working assembler programs are written, then switch to C.

Also look at the produced code on the first times, to be shure, that it work as expected.
