Thanks for the answers. I figured there was a way to do this considering there is a separate line for reading ram and rom on the chip itself. Interestingly enough my book Programming and Interfacing the 8051 Microcontroller doesn't straight out mention the MOVC and MOVX instructions in the table on page 38. All other move instructions are layed out.
