All these days I thought smart coding was the best way...saves memory,is much faster....

Please know, there is absolutely nothing wrong with faster code and more compact code. The problem comes when maintainability is ignored to make 'better' code.
The issue is to be 'smart' when required and not just for the purpose of being 'smart'.

In my current project I have parts that would be totally non-maintainable had the comment to code ratio not been 3:1, these are the parts where speed is a prerequisite for the project working at all. In other areas where speed is not of the essence, the code is written for maintainabilty first, speed and compactness second.

As far as memory compactness goes, that was important once, but now when you can get 2 megabyte for $2, who cares, except when 63.99k is reached (I will do anything to avoid the overhead of code banking)
