One thing that came up in the follow-ups, that I did not mention in my description is that the solution I suggested is insensitive to missing nodes, it will just give up after 5 mSec, In one case I had missing nodes deleted from the list after 3 tries This requires a restart of the master after any slave has been (re)connected, but in that case it was desirable to do so.
